WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?
Glaucoma is the biggest cause of irreversible vision loss. it is estimated that 111.8 million people will have glaucoma in 2040. However, half of those who suffer from glaucoma are not aware of their disease. Glaucoma disease, also known as ”eye blood pressure”, can be defined as damage to the optic nerve caused by an increase in intraocular pressure. If it is not diagnosed early and cannot be treated, permanent vision loss occurs. Glaucoma is also popularly known as ”blackwater disease” Dec.
HOW IS GLAUCOMA TREATED?
In glaucoma, drug treatment is primarily resorted to in cases where the value of eye blood pressure is not at the very upper limits. Topical medications, that is, eyedrops, are used here. With these drugs, eye pressure is tried to be reduced to normal limits. The patient is followed up at December intervals during drug treatment. If the eye blood pressure is reduced to normal limits with medication, the patient continues to take medication for life. In cases where eye blood pressure does not fall despite drug treatment, surgical methods can be resorted to. The options here are laser glaucoma treatment or eye surgery called trabeculectomy. It should be remembered that the goal in all medicated or surgical treatments of glaucoma is to maintain the current condition of the eye. Bearing in mind that vision losses caused by the disease are irreversible, routine eye examinations should not be neglected.
