PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men. In cancer-related deaths, it ranks second. The prostate is a secretory organ found in men, approximately the size of a walnut, located under the bladder, producing various secretions for reproductive activities.

Prostate cancer occurs as a result of some cells that make up the prostate tissue forming tumor structures with an abnormal course. Cancers can develop from only one part of the prostate, as well as develop in more than one part.

Increasing age and genetic predisposition are the risk factors identified in prostate cancer. In the light of these risk factors, early diagnostic tests are performed on patients. Prostate cancer screening is recommended at the age of 50 and later in men without a family history of prostate cancer, while screening for prostate cancer at an earlier age is recommended in those with a family history of prostate cancer. The methods used for screening purposes are rectal examination with a finger (for the prostate) and PSA measurement with a blood test.

What is the Most Commonly Used Form of Treatment for Prostate Cancer Today?

Currently, prostate cancer can be detected at an early stage with the increasing use of screening tests. The most commonly used treatment for early stage (local) prostate cancer that has not spread to the environment is surgical treatment. If necessary, it can be combined with hormone therapy or radiation therapy.
