Bone Marrow And Stem Cell Transplantation

In our Hospitals, which have an international reputation in Organ Transplantation, we provide services with Bone Marrow Transplantation in accordance with the vision of becoming a reference center in Turkey in many branches. The unit, which aims to meet the bone marrow transplantation needs of patients not only from Istanbul and Turkey, but also from many countries of the world, has all the facilities provided by today’s technology.

In addition to ensuring international standards on bone marrow transplantation; all the services that patients need are provided. Patients with Multiple Myeloma (Malignant bone marrow disease caused by plasma cells), lymphoma (Hematological lymph node cancer), acute leukemia (Blood cancer) and blood diseases such as chronic leukemia, aplastic anemia can undergo bone marrow transplantation at the center, which performs treatment processes in a multidisciplinary structure.

Bone marrow transplantation / Stem cell transplantation

The cells responsible for blood production in the human organism are stem cells in the bone marrow. The transplantation of cells with these extremely special functions is generally called “bone marrow transplantation” or “stem cell transplantation”. If a bone marrow transplant is performed from the patient’s own stem cells, it is called an “autologous transplant”, if it is performed from donors with family members or non-related tissue matching, it is called an “allogeneic transplant”. It is the stem cell of the blood that is transplanted during a bone marrow transplant.

In the past years, stem cells were collected directly from bone marrow using special needles and in operating room conditions. However, this method is rarely used today. In recent years, stem cells have been transferred from the bone marrow to the blood with a more specialized drug, and the cells are collected by a method called “apheresis”. This method does not require any surgical intervention. The bone marrow transplant process also does not require a surgical procedure. The marrow is given to the patient through a vein, bone marrow cells find and settle the bone marrow themselves with their biological properties and start blood production. The main difficulty of bone marrow transplantation is that the patient’s follow-up is performed well while the bone marrow regains its functions in its new place. During this critical period, red and white blood cells, platelets responsible for clotting, cannot be made. Therefore, this period is a period when there may be complications such as anemia, infection and bleeding.  It is important to be able to prevent rejection of the marrow or diseases caused by new marrow by treating unwanted conditions such as infections, bleeding that may occur during this period.

The success of bone marrow transplantation, technical infrastructure and germs from the isolation is very good, with complications that may occur in organ transplantation to intensive care departments to provide the necessary interventions, interdisciplinary cohesion, cooperation and team experience is achieved when conditions such as come together.
